Apple will have two big introductions this fall - 2012

On Saturday, August 25, 2012 0 comments

Walt Mossberg's AllThingsD.com confirms there will be two separate Apple product introductions this fall. The iPhone 5 in September and the iPad Mini in October.

I had previously mentioned in my Exciting Products Yet To Launch This Fall 2012 piece a couple weeks ago that they would both be at the September 12 media event.

Instead Apple will focus consumers on the smartphone at the September 12th event before rolling out the smaller (7") iTablet during the iPod refresh event. And while nothing is certain until the events, even the iPad Mini name is sounding more and more like it is a keeper.

Personally, I am due for an upgrade and am looking forward to the iPhone 5 introduction as I am still toting around a iPhone 4...never justifying the 4s upgrade. I'm certain the 5 will be a solid improvement over my current iPhone. As for the new, smaller iPad...I'm on the fence. Truth be told, like I have mentioned in past articles, I am almost preferring my Macbook Air on many occasions...where the iPad is really just my surfing, media consumption and games platform. Any content generation is largely left to my laptop.

But you never know what Apple might have up their sleeve with these introductions??? More as information comes available.

Exciting Pressure Sensitive Stylus for iPad and iPhone...

On Friday, August 24, 2012 0 comments

I am pretty excited about the forthcoming Pogo Connect stylus for iPad and iPhone. While there has been a slew of stylus'...none have really excited me. After using each of them, I was largely disappointed. Granted I am not an artist but I just felt like I was squishing a rubber or felt nub around to get some dimensionality into whatever I tried to sketch.

The good news is that there is a new set of solutions on the horizon that offer a path to provide greater control over the sensitivity and tactile nature of using a stylus on a tablet. Ten One Design (the makers of the basic but popular Pogo Sketch) is about to launch a Bluetooth 4.0, pressure sensitive stylus that communicates the pressure of the pen to the application wirelessly on the iOS device.

Artists have enjoyed this capability with some high-end graphics tablets and will surely enjoy this advancement but for me the best benefit of this type of solution is that the application can ignore all touch inputs except for the pen. If you have used a stylus to take notes on a multi-touch tablet, you probably have had the experience of your wrist touching the display and drawing something on the screen. This stylus can address this and turn note-taking into a joy.

I am really looking forward to this and some other intelligent stylus solutions to see how my tablet experience evolves. I will let you know when the price and availability is announced shortly.

Below is a video quickly highlighting the Pogo Connect's sensitivity at play...

This system is expected to include a "second screen" tablet-like controller that allows games and applications to display additional information on your portable display.

We've seen this device in action across an assortment of electronic and entertainment tradeshows for the past year and are very interested to see the system at this week's E3 show with content nearly ready for the commercial launch.

Check it out today...Sunday, June 3rd @ 3pm PDT.

iPad 3...game on!

On Thursday, February 9, 2012 0 comments

Looks like the crew over at allthingd.com have gotten word that Apple will be hosting an event the first week on March. The event will be held in San Francisco, presumably at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. This is the large hall that Apple announces BIG THINGS like the iPad 2 in early March last year.

We'll have to wait a bit for great clarification as we get closer to the date but expect more computing power, enhanced graphics capabilities and a higher resolution screen for great image clarity especially with small text and the like.

Still more questions than answers like...What will it be called? What resolution? How does older software look? How easily will it be to convert software to fit the new resolution? What new graphics capabilities such as 3D rendering enhancements, multi-tasking and the like.

Obviously Apple needs to continue to innovate in this space as the competitive products are maturing. Amazon's Fire fills a niche with its low powered, low cost Kindle Fire and ASUS with their high-powered Transformer Prime.

More as information starts to flow in...

CES 2012: Samsung Does It Big

On Monday, January 9, 2012 0 comments

Samsung took the stage and walked us through a wide range of products introductions covering a gambit of categories. There was talk about televisions, smartphones, tablets, computers, home appliances, cameras...the list goes on. There was a consistent motif with Samsung, LG and other vendors...the solutions have to be simpler to use.

Smart Appliances

In the category of refrigerators, Samsung has been the top seller for the past four years. These smart appliances feature interactive touch-screens, mobile apps and connectivity to help manage your daily life.

This year Samsung is introducing a Smart Washer and Dryer set that will track your wash and notify you when it is ready for the next cycle.

Home Theater
Samsung spent a great deal of time talking about the television and how it will return to being the center of the home. New functionality and capabilities will continue to be added creating a hub for the family and the home.

The ES8000 is the new flagship in the companies LCD SMART TV line-up and features a new dual-core processor, the ability to upgrade the core processing platform for future-proofing the device and a host of system and network services.

Some of the more interesting features is the ability to control your tv via body gestures and voice. And a host of new connectivity solutions between these main television displays and secondary displays such as the company's line-up of smartphones and tablets.
It was clear that Samsung, like other television manufacturers are realizing that they are part of a full ecosystem and need to be more actively involved in the content creation. Samsung was also talking about partnerships and deals regarding content in the form of new interactive features or applications like their newly announced deal to be the first television to offer "Angry Birds" the extremely popular tablet and smartphone game.

There is a great deal of talk about the other services of the new SMART TV's to really create this hub in the family. Photo and video sharing, family fitness monitoring, a kids zone and a full marketplace of downloadable applications.

And not to be outdone by LG's announcement of a 55-inch OLED television with its extremely vibrant color capabilities and thin form factors, Samsung also announced by the end of the year, they too would be selling one.

Smartphones, Tablets and Samsung's "Things in the Middle"
Apple's late leader Mr. Job's once said that the iPad's 9" display is the perfect size to complement the iPhone. He is referring to the fact that the iPad's screen gives you more real estate and you need to create dedicated but new application interfaces to properly take advantage of the larger screen.

The way Samsung pumps out 10 sizes (exaggerating) between the iPhone all the way up to larger than an iPad...they seem to be out to prove him wrong!

Samsung Galaxy Note
To that end, Samsung announced the Galaxy Note that definitely splits the difference between a smartphone and the traditional tablet sizes. This smart-phone-tablet features a 5.3 inch HD Super AMOLED vibrant display and includes a 256 levels of pressure pen unlike the old-stylus' on phones. This pen can detect how hard or lightly you are pressing and adjust the ink drawn to match.

The Galaxy Note is an exclusive with AT&T.

Another big announcement in the tablet corner is the update to the original Galaxy Tab. The new Galaxy Tab 7.7 LTE features the Super AMOLED PLUS display technology which is stunning to see in person, an IR port to allow for home remote control type behavior and will be launching exclusively with Verizon.

PC Computing
Samsung has seen success with its original Series 9 laptop and is introducing its successor at CES. The new version features a single form aluminum body and finger-print resistent texture. This 15 inch laptop weighs in 2.5 lbs and measure .5 inches thick. The display is extremely bright and the keyboard is backlit. The computer is said to boot up in 9.8 seconds and have a 10 hour battery life.

And to keep with the trend of this year's show, Samsung also introduced the all-new Series 5 Ultrabook. This ultra-light laptop still comes with a 14" display and a DVD drive even in this small form-factor.

Cameras
There was talk about their camera line-up which seems to lean on their connectivity and ability to upload straight to email, Facebook and YouTube but to date I have not been blown away with this product line. Not to say they won't get better but this is something we'll have to wait and see.

Samsung is not copying Apple. Here's the proof...

On Wednesday, September 28, 2011 0 comments

As I am sure many of you know, Apple is suing Samsung and vice versa over a dozen patents in dispute. There is a lot of discussion as to what is and isn't a copy-cat and what intellectual properties are protected. A member of Reddit has posted a series of side by side comparisons to review the supposed similarities between Samsung's tablet product and Apple's iPad...

Amazon on Fire with Silk

On 0 comments

Amazon just announced the "Kindle Fire"...a new tablet that leverages a new type of web browser called Silk.

The Amazon's Kindle Fire is a smallish tablet with a 7" display, a dual-core processor, multi-touch interface and is priced at $199. Amazon Jeff Bezos indicates that they are clearly providing a robust platform for half the price of an iPad or Android Tablets.  Now this is a tablet without a camera, microphone nor 3G connectivity, instead this platform communicates on the Whispersync of the original Kindle or wi-fi.

It is clearly a platform designed to consume content as opposed to generate it. It leverages a wi-fi connection to maintain high-speed connectivity and leverages the power of Amazon's EC2 cloud computing platform for computational computing muscle and storage.

The all-new Silk browser leverages the tablet and cloud computing architecture to split your web browser workload. The concept of cloud computing is something Amazon has spent a great deal of time developing. Their EC2 platform is leveraged by a great many companies today to provide web services and applications and the Kindle Fire and Silk browser take advantage of the cloud to provide predictive outcomes to speed up your web surfing efforts.

Combined, the Kindle Fire, Silk browser, a substantial library of downloadable content (music, movies, books, magazines and games) and online computing results in Amazon having built a viable platform for those seeking as simple, managed content library and online experience. All your content can be streamed to your Kindle Fire from Amazon's EC2 cloud and there are options for downloading to the device for offline access. Amazon has 17 million songs, over a million books and hundreds of magazines and 100,000 movies and TV shows. Amazon's AppStore has thousands of applications that are already compatible with the Kindle Fire as well.

All and all, a compelling package. I can definitely see a consumer demand for this product. It will be interesting to see just how much demand. Will a current Kindle consumer upgrade? Definitely looking forward to checking this out when it is commercially available starting on November 15th.

Here is some details about the Kindle's Silk browser and cloud computing architecture...
